Leave Them At Home – Items You Don’t Need To Pack

Packing for an upcoming holiday can be difficult. There is only so much room in your suitcase or carry-on, and you want to make the most of it. Luckily, there are certain items you can leave at home, which will give you more room to pack essential, must-have items.

Shampoo, Conditioner, and Other Toiletries

At home, you might have two or three bottles of shampoo in the shower, but you don’t really need – nor do you want them – on holiday. Try to pack as few toiletries as possible, as it will help free up space. It might be a good idea to purchase smaller, travel sized bottles of your essential toiletries, as it will save you time, money, and space in your suitcase.

In some cases, you may be able to not take them at all. Some travellers opt to not pack these essential items and instead purchase them when they get to their final destination. It is cheaper and frees up space in your suitcase or carry-on. Most accommodation supplies shower gels and shampoos, which negates the need to pack your own.

Extra Clothing

When packing, it is tempting to want to make sure you bring clothing for all occasions, but chances are you don’t really need all that extra clothing. Think long and hard about what activities you will be doing while on holiday, and plan accordingly.

Remember, you can always go to the store and purchase extra clothing if a fancy dinner comes up. But if you aren’t planning on one, why take up the space in your suitcase with clothing you may never use or wear.

Snacks

Pack only a small amount of snacks to hold you over for the plane ride, but don’t go wild with the amount of food you pack. First, you might not be able to eat it all, and second it takes up a lot of room.

Consider purchasing favourite snacks once you land at your final destination. It will prevent you from packing too many snacks, and it will allow you to have extra room in your suitcase. You also need to be mindful of food products that you are taking interstate or internationally. Check local import laws before you fly.

Other Items Not to Pack

In addition to extra clothing, snacks, and toiletries, there are a number of other items you can choose to leave at home. Those items include:

  • Work related items – folders, notepads, even your laptop – your going on holidays, so take a break!
  • Valuables – watches, rings, necklaces, and jewellery
  • Reading material – you may think you are going to read, but chances are you won’t have the time or consider an e-Reader (Kindle) to save on some packing space.
  • Crossword puzzles and other puzzle books
  • Extra beach towels
  • Extra brushes, curling irons, hairdryers

If you want to pack smart for your next holiday, consider leaving these items at home. You will be surprised at how much room you will have when you opt to not take these items with you.

So now that your packing lighter, why not check out how to travel like a true pro and glide through airport security.
