Virgin Holidays has announced a private lounge on Brownes Beach in Barbados to occupy travellers while they wait for their flight home.
The Departure Beach opened in May 2018. There will be a beach bar, restaurant, complimentary towels and showers, WiFi, gaming area and an air-conditioned lounge. It will be located on a public beach (all of the beaches in Barbados are public) but the sunloungers and facilities are for booked customers only.

Virgin said that the majority of international flights depart Barbados in the evening. Holidaymakers often complain of losing a day as hotels require check-out before midday. Virgin is working hard to ensure that their key focus is always on their clients and making sure they work hard to ensure the customer is its main focus.
Included in the $35 a day price is a transfer from hotel to the beach lounge, food, drinks and the transfer to the airport. A bag drop facility will also be available in the lounge so passengers are able to check-in before going to the terminal. The entry is free for customers staying at Savannah Beach in Barbados or those on a Virgin Cruise which terminates in Barbados. The lounge is only available to Virgin customers.
Barbados Tourism said, “We’re thrilled that Barbados has been chosen to pioneer such a revolutionary concept – and as it’s situated on one of the most picturesque beaches on the island why would you choose to waste that last day of your holiday?” Virgin Holidays said, “We have been working hard to ensure we’ve removed as many pain points as possible for our customers.”
This isn’t the first time Virgin has executed an unorthodox pre-flight experience. Its v-room lounge for customers at Gatwick and Manchester are like airport lounges – only without the need for a business class ticket to access them.
