Mobile Check-In At Melbourne Airport

Checking in for an international flight is one of the most time-consuming and frustrating tasks. Unlike local flights where you can quickly check-in from a computer or mobile phone and receive a boarding pass, with an international flight you have to go to the airport, stand in a lengthy line and talk directly to an agent before passing slowly through the international passport control. Luckily, all of that may be a thing of the past.

Starting in August of 2018, international travellers may be able to check-in online. This means no more having to wait in long lines to print out your boarding pass. Instead, you can quickly and easily check in for your international flight from the comfort of your home or hotel.

Expect a Wait to Use the New Mobile Check-In System

Travellers are eagerly awaiting the new mobile check-in system, but they will have to wait just a little bit longer.

Each airline will choose when they will implement the new mobile check-in system for international flights. This means it could be available as soon as you leave for the holiday in September or you may have to wait a few more months.

Most airlines have yet to announce when they will make mobile check-in available for international flights. The only one to officially announce when they will have it available is Qantas. Qantas states that travellers will be able to get their international boarding passes using the new mobile check-in system starting in October. The only exception is US departures.

Why the Sudden Change in How People Check-in for Flights?

The new changes to how people check-in for international flights are all a part of the Australian government’s latest campaign to improve international travel. Some of the changes that have come into effect as part of this campaign include doing away with immigration passenger cards, launching facial recognition software and streamlining the passport checking process.

Changes to how people fly internationally are needed to help streamline the process. Due to the increasing numbers of international travellers, airports like Melbourne Airport were seeing backups in the security lines, check-in and customs, which infuriated many passengers. It is hoped some of these changes will help reduce wait times and create a smoother and stress-free experience.

The new mobile check-in system might not be available to you on your next international trip depending upon when you are leaving, but it is definitely a sign that things are changing and for the better.
