Melbourne Airport strikes back on after being delayed by the Brussels terror attacks

As we reported last week (Easter international airport strike eggscruciating for passengers) Customs and Immigration officers were to strike but cancelled industrial action in the wake of the terrorist attached in Brussels.  Well, Melbourne Airport strikes are back on!

So how will this affect International travel in an out of Melbourne Airport?

Melbourne Airport strikes

From 31st March Melbourne International Airport will be affected on 31st of March and 1st, 4th, 5th and 7th of April during the following times, 4am to 12Midday and 4pm to Midnight.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection issued a statement on its website, warning of interruptions at airports in every state until April 7.

The Department’s statement said the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) is asking its members, who are employees of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, to participate in protected industrial action at various international airports from March 29.

“While the likely level of participation is unknown, we strongly encourage airline and cruise ship passengers to plan for potential delays by arriving at international airports and cruise ship terminals even earlier,” it stated.

From our experience, previous strikes have seen a mixed bag of impacts on international passenger movement from long delays and to no delays/business as usual – our advice – arrive early!  How early should you arrive at Melbourne Airport?  Most international airlines recommend at least 3 hours before the flight, but this differs between airlines and also economy, business and first-class travel – We honestly can’t say, as the impact could be minor or it could be major. See our tips on planning for the Melbourne International Airport strike here.
