Stay Up-to-Date on Your Vaccinations
Depending upon where you are travelling, it is vital that all your vaccinations are up to date. There are certain areas across the globe where some illnesses and diseases are still very active. Staying current with your vaccinations will give you a line of defence against some of these illnesses.
If you are unsure if your vaccinations are up-to-date, you can talk with your healthcare provider. He or she will be able to tell you what vaccinations you may need to have updated before travelling.
Reduce Your Risk of Developing DVT While Travelling
DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, is a serious condition that can develop when you are seated for excessive amounts of time. People who develop DVT have blood clots that form in their legs. Those blood clots, if not properly treated, can cause extreme fatigue, leg pain, and in some cases severe respiratory problems.
In an effort to avoid developing DVT, it is a good idea to get up during your flight and walk around. Even just walking up and down the aisle every half hour or so will dramatically reduce your risk of developing DVT.
Avoid Post-Flight Fatigue
Jetlag is an awful feeling and whilst many people are fine while they are flying, the minute they get off the plane they feel disoriented, fatigued, and confused. This is often caused by dehydration.
In an effort to avoid feeling this way, we recommend that you try to stay hydrated while on the plane. When we say hydrated, we don’t mean soft drinks or alcoholic beverages; we are talking about plain water. It isn’t that you can’t enjoy the occasional soft drink or alcoholic beverage while flying, just make sure you drink plenty of water.
Learn About Where You Are Travelling
Not every place is as pleasant as Australia. Many destinations don’t have the same water filtration systems or food processing procedures as we do in Australia. If you are not familiar with the area you are travelling to it could cause a lot of health problems.
Learn the following about where you are travelling:
- Is the water safe to drink? If not, is bottled water available?
- Are there any at-risk foods that you should avoid, such as shellfish or meats?
- What types of diseases are predominant in the area? (E-coli, salmonella, etc.)
Learning this information will help you know what precautions you need to take while you are on holiday. It will help you know what foods and drinks to avoid, and which ones are safe to consume and how to stay healthy on holiday.
