No trip to Japan in the spring is complete without seeing the cherry blossoms. These beautiful trees start to blossom in mid-March and will stay that way until late April. If you are in the area, this is an absolutely ‘must see’.

Cherry blossoms can be viewed almost all over the place, but if you want to make sure you get to see them, you can visit favourite places like Shinjuku-gyeon National Garden or Ueno Onshi Park. These parks have amazing views of the cherry blossoms and often have parties or activities throughout the season to honour these beautiful trees.

Take Part in a Purification Ritual or Just Attend One!

Yakuo-in is a sacred Buddhist temple located in the mountains. Every spring, typically in March, they have a purification ritual that involves fire. The purification ritual is known as the Hiwatari-sai, which can be translated to the fire-walking festival.

If you attend this purification festival, you will see a huge bonfire. People will gather around it and rub themselves with sticks. After which the sticks are burned in the bonfire. Once this is completed, the monks of the temple will proceed to walk on hot coals. Festival attendees are welcome to take part, but are not required.

Go Clam Digging on Tokyo Bay

Families all over Japan like to gather around and take part in clam digging. They head to the sandy beaches and start digging. It is a unique family bonding experience.

Clam digging is a great activity for the family to take part in, especially if you are visiting Japan in April. It is a low-cost activity, as it only requires a shovel, rake, pail, and rubber boots, and you can do it for hours.

The best place to go clam digging is along Tokyo Bay, but there are hundreds of other beaches you can visit. Visit one or several beaches and have fun as a family.
